Art & Textiles exhibition in Wolfsburg Art Museum
Art Exchange VOL.04/2013|

On December 10, “Art & Textiles—Fabric as Material and Concept in Modern Art from Klimt to the Present” exhibition was opened in Wolfsburg Art Museum. This exhibition involved 200 works by approximately 80 artists including Gustav Klimt and Van Gogh. With textile as main carrier, this exhibition intended to bring audiences to understand the role of textile in the contemporary arts.

In the large exhibition hall with an area of 2700 square meters, visitors would witness some items in the prehistoric age such as a textile fragment before Columbus’s discovery of New Continent collected by Anni Albers. With this textile exhibition, the museum aims at re-examining the contemporary art history from Art Nouveau till now when the separation of application from fine arts results in that all the handicraft have been repulsed for quite a long time. In this process, modernist painting sought its way out of the relationship between artistry and technology, which will be found in the exhibited textiles. At the same time, visitors would watch some paintings and video works related to textile as if audiences were brought into a museum of national history. This exhibition is said to last until February 3, 2014.
