How Are We to Tell The Story of Hong Kong People?——the Unique Feature of Hong Kong Literature

Many people said that it was very difficult to read the book and tell the story of Hong Kong. Hong Kong is a metropolis, nobody can illustrate it clearly in a few words. Talking about Hong Kong culture, many people would use our city flower ”Bauhinia” as a figure of speech to indicate its distinguishing essay feature of a mixture of Chinese and foreigners, and a galaxy of talents of Chinese and foreign culture. But there is very few thorough study of the texture of Hong Kong culture, which lead to a difficult position that do not know how to say.

Hong Kong culture in essence is a metropolitan culture, a culture for the masses, with heavy commercial color. There is an essential distinction compared with the cultural form originated from traditional agricultural society. That is why for a long time Hong Kong was an object of ridicule as a “culture desert.” If we look closely at Hong Kong literary form from the angle of traditional pastoral “pure literature”, the conclusion is unavoidable. If we look at Hong Kong literature and culture from the angle of modern industrial society and post modern cultural vision, we will find that Hong Kong culture has an extraordinary splendor, the cultural landscape formerly covered, ignored and forgotten, will keep pouring in, there will be too many things for your eyes to take in, you will be dazzled. Hong Kong has her flourishing, brilliant and splendid culture.

Hong Kong literature has multi-cultural feature. The good geographical location, freedom space rendered her broadminded and tolerance. The manifestation in literature is to take in everything good and let a hundred flowers blossom. Hong Kong’s novels on the one hand kept and extended the traditional thread of thought of Chinese literature, on the other absorbed a great deal of western modern art conceptions. Hong Kong’s novels not only have immersion of oriental traditional culture, but also international field of vision.

Friends who have certain knowledge of Hong Kong literature will find that the framework of Hong Kong’s novels are comparatively narrow and small, no grand stories of great rivers, no impassioned proud words, no touched tragic stories, what is more, no heroic image of indomitable spirit. What Hong Kong’s novels have are chitchat, ordinary and real, like what happened in a “small town story”. This realistic style is in conformity with the race feature and the common people spirit of Hong Kong, that is, down-to-earth, do not uphold boasting and exaggeration. Hong Kong writers are good at telling stories of their city starting from daily life in order to pick up the scattered memories of the city. For example, Mr. Ales Law’s novel Echoes of the Rainbow” the writer recalled the time and tide in 1960s with a style of chitchat, to evoke the Hong Kong people’s sentimental feeling and longing for their native land. What this kind of novels in pursuit of is a collective memory. Writers in Hong Kong cared more for the life and death of this city. Some of them do no crave for recounting national and native land conditions; there is a kind of resistance against the exposition of the nation, even to keep a distance deliberately. The distinctive cultural makings of Hong Kong people and unique state of Hong Kong literature are the result of its special conditions. Because the city’s commercial cultural atmosphere, city life style, metropolitan environment and the humanities circumstances, all have influences on people’s way of understanding and aesthetic temperament and interest.

Of course, we must know that this year Hong Kong literature put a special emphasis on “metropolitan territory” which caused some confusion and led to some misunderstanding. Some advocators hoist their flag and regard Hong Kong literature as an arena independent of Chinese literature. That is an unhealthy mind of literature and an irrational act. Among writers in Hong Kong, Zhong Xiaoyang’s A Pinwheel without Wind was beyond the ideological discrepancy and returned to the feelings of Chinese traditional culture, depicted the common homeland in our hearts. Isn’t this the common China consciousness in the hearts of many people in Hong Kong? No matter how to rewrite the history of Hong Kong literature, its Chinese blood relationship and identity can not be changed in any way.
