<p>　　该书共5卷，凡240万字，主体由中国古代民间故事（包括先秦至清代，约2400则）和中国现当代民间故事（包括20世纪以来56个民族，约2800则）构成。一则故事的篇幅一般300字，最长不超过500字，朗朗上口、易诵易记、易于使用。</p>
<p>　　中国古今民间故事浩如烟海，该书编著者历经5年时光，从成千上万个民间故事中筛选出这些代表性作品，为广大民间故事爱好者编纂了一部通俗易懂的读物，是极其难能可贵的。通读全书，读者不仅能通览中国古今浩瀚的民间故事，而且可以从这些古籍书目中深入认识民间文学图书出版的悠久历史及其蓬勃发展的现状。</p>
<p>　　民间文学、民俗学资深学者涂石给予该书高度评价：“《中国民间故事通览》无论从内容审校、版式设计还是封面装帧、印刷装订等方面都争取做到尽善尽美，不失为一部内容丰富、形式优美的文化精品。它的面世，绝不是偶然的。它是中国现代民俗学运动在新历史时期的一个必然产物，也是改革开放新时期民间文学理论研究和实践的一个重大成果。”</p>
