The performance trade fair (PTF) is the important index in judging the quality of an international art festival. Undoubtedly, the Performance Trade Fair of Shanghai International Art Festival (SIAF) has become the one with the maximum international characteristics, the highest level in the performing circle and the most effective results in China. After 14 years of successful operations, the PTF has also become a wharf where international performing colleagues enter the huge Chinese performing market. As a witness who attended the PTF this year, we have not only experienced the lively development trends of Chinese performing market, but also keenly sensed the confidence exuding from the dialogue on the equal footing between SIAF and other counterparts in the world. 

It is noteworthy that the PTF has acquired the actual results through the introductory performances with contents as the foreground and the forms as the backgrounds. The special introductory performance, the epic micro film Nvshu, namely Women’s Writing, by Tan Dun, the famous composer, brought the house down and accepted the invitations from 15 worldly famous art institutions including the Prague’s Spring Art Festival, Helsinki Art Festival and Oakland Art Festival on the spot. When learning the news that this project has been included in the agreement with SIFA Center concerning presentation in the following session in autumn next year, China National Symphony Orchestra, which has not been to Shanghai for many years, immediately expressed its willingness in this cooperation.

Among the introductory performances of Chinese dramas and traditional operas, The Green Snake, produced by National Theater of China and jointly invited by Hong Kong Art Festival and SIAF, has captured the earnest attentions from the media and foreign institutions. In the meanwhile, the multi-media drama titled The Legendary Story of Lady White produced by Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center also aroused the great interests of Istanbul Theater Festival, Vienna Art Festival and Helsinki Art Festival. Li Shujian, the famous performing artist of Henan Opera and vice president of China Theater Association, came to the stage personally and performed the 20-minute climatic episode of Henan Opera, Cheng Ying’s Rescuing the Infant, and Kang Jie, the faithful fan of this opera and deputy director general of Department of Culture of Henan Province temporarily acted as the bilingual introducer, which impressed upon the art directors of Serbia National Theater and Oakland Art Festival of New Zealand. This play also got the invitation of performance.
