Special Guest from Taiwan and Foreign Countries:

Enhancing Cultural International Influence

Sun Jiazheng,Vice Chiar of CPPCC and President of CFLAC Talked with Special Overseas Guests

“In this big Chinese family, what the filmmakers across the Strait endeavor for life is nothing but Chinese film. Chinese film, I always have a passion for this honorable title” Mr. Lee Hsing, famous film director from Taiwan and a special guest of the Congress, said. His direct expression made us feel closer at heart. Altogether 12 special guests from Taiwan and 17 from foreign countries have travelled either beyond the Strait or through tens of thousands of miles to Beijing. More than joyfulness and excitement, everyone bears a cordial concern about the same issue. In 1994, Professor Wales, a Canadian expert on Chinese studies, announced that the 21st century will be an era of Chinese cultural identification. This prediction now seems to have come true. Today, more and more people come to realize the beauty and abundance of Chinese culture, government advocates cultural development and prosperity, and over 30 years’ miracle of economic development and cultural construction gained the global applause. In such a circumstance, how will these Chinese art workers gather to expand the international influence of Chinese culture?

Exchange of Literary and Art Information

Currently, China has become the world’s second largest economy, but comparatively her soft power, cultural construction still lags behind. Along with the increasingly frequent integration and competition of various ideas and cultures at international forum, culture is playing a more important role in the competition of all-round national power. How to turn economic advantage into cultural one and how to upgrade China from a compound of culture to a power have become a key question in common concern for Chinese artists both at home and abroad. The successful presentation of Beijing Olympic Games, Shanghai Expo and Guangzhou Asian Games has fully manifested both the profound tradition and modern outlook of Chinese culture. Those large-scale events such as National Year between China and Russia and Cultural Year between China and France have aroused Chinese Fashion or Chinese Heat all over the world. As highlight of Chinese culture, those events have established various bridges for Chinese communication and exchange with the world.

The contact between Chinese artists across the Strait and between China and foreign countries should be closer, and their communication and exchange be strengthened, which will facilitate the road of Chinese culture to the world. This opinion was acknowledged by many participants. “If China becomes the leading character of the 21st century, the world will focus their attention and the charm of Chinese culture will be appreciated.” Liu Kuo-sung commented. His vision is being carried out and practiced in the art creation of Chinese artists both at home and abroad.

Among the special guests, Mr. Wong Keelong, a famous poet from Taiwan, is indeed an old friend. Having attended the National Congress on successive 4 occasions, he put forward his suggestion at the 7th Congress that an art forum across the Strait be established. His suggestion has now led to the occurrence of Chinese Art Forum of Mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, which has witnessed annual holding for three years and attracted hundreds of artists and art critics to discuss the development and exchange of Chinese culture. In this session, he raised another suggestion that some non-governmental organization and art agencies such as CFLAC set up Art Alliance across the Strait, which will provide convenience in the respects of administration,  formality and organizational structure for Chinese cultural circle across the Strait and even throughout the world to conduct long-term and regular exchange.

As the government encourages promoting cultural command, Lee Hsing suggest that CFLAC confer lifetime achievement award to those distinguished artists with excellent artistry in Taiwan. “For example, the well-known poet Mr. Yu Kwung-chung has made outstanding contribution to the whole Chinese literary and art cause, and there are quite a lot similar artists in Taiwan. If CFLAC confers award to recognize their artistry, it will be a significant breakthrough in the relationship across the Strait.” In Mr. Wu Rujun’s opinion, CFLAC is expected to award to those overseas young and middle-aged artists, “With the encouraging awards from CFLAC, we will have more space to develop our art career.”
