China, a Country in Huge Demand for Films is a Surefire Great Country of Film Production
Art Exchange VOL.04/2011|Han Sanping

In 2011, China has 10,000 silver screens, which are estimated to reach the number of 30,000 in the following five years while the number of audiences is supposed to be 1.3 billion and the box office receipt will rise to 30 billion or 35 billion RMB. All these figures can match the pace of Chinese overall economic progress. Last year, the national box office receipt exceeded 10 billion. We are entering the period of Chinese film industry’s speedy development. This year, I guess it will reach the annual rising rate of 27%.

At present, Chinese GDP is 38,000 billion while our cultural industry approximately occupies 1,100 billion, among which the box office receipt of film industry reaches 10 billion, just 1% of the output of cultural industry. What will it happen in the following five years? Cultural industry should occupy 5% of GDP and become the mainstay industry. If we presume GDP to be 60,000 billion, then, 5% means 3,000 billion. If the box office receipt of Chinese film industry remains as 1%, that will be 30 billion. Therefore, we will double in size next year, which provides golden opportunities for Chinese film industry, all the related working staff and the film companies of different types. It also lays a solid foundation for the global film companies, especially American ones that go to China to seek the cooperation.

It should be pointed out that all these figures are the minimum or basic demands of the Chinese government and Chinese audiences on the Chinese film industry. In order to achieve these goals, Chinese film working staff should not only make painstaking efforts, but also seek the international cooperation, which is vital as well.
